A supportive home environment is essential for your child’s academic success.
Here are a few tips to achieve your goals :
• Create a dedicated study space: Ensure your child has a quiet, well-lit area to do their homework.
• Set a routine: Establish a regular schedule for homework and study time.
• Limit distractions: Turn off the TV and minimize noise during study time.
• Show your support: Let your child know that you believe in their abilities and are there to help.

Homework and Study Tips
• Review assignments together: Look over your child’s homework and make sure they understand the instructions.
• Break down tasks: If your child is overwhelmed by a large assignment, help them break it down into smaller, more manageable steps.
• Encourage questions: Let your child know that it’s okay to ask for help when they don’t understand something. They can also ask questions when they understood the assignment, cultivate curiosity.
• Use flashcards: Flashcards can be a helpful tool for studying vocabulary or facts.
• Practice active recall: Encourage your child to quiz themselves on what they’ve learned.

Building Positive Relationships with Teachers
A strong relationship with your child’s teachers can make a significant difference in their academic success.
Here’s how to build positive relationships:
• Communicate regularly: Stay in touch with your child’s teachers and let them know if you have any concerns. Have a look at their student’s planner to stay up-to-date with important informations.
• Be respectful: Treat teachers with courtesy and respect. I know some situations might be frustrating but you need to stay calm and polite, especially for us Black moms who are subjected to “tone policing” when we make valid points.
• Offer support: Let teachers know how you can support your child’s learning. Ask for recommendations like a list of books that can enhance your child’s reading skills.
• Attend parent-teacher conferences: These meetings are a great opportunity to discuss your child’s progress, and to demonstrate to the staff that we Black parents are involved and interested in our children’s academic success.

The Benefits of Extracurricular Activities
Extracurricular activities can help your child develop new skills, make friends, and boost their self-esteem.
Here are some benefits to consider:
• Academic success: Participation in extracurricular activities can improve academic performance, playing boarding games at a school club can encourage numeracy and literacy abilities.
• Social skills: Extracurricular activities can help your child develop important social skills, such as teamwork and communication.
• Confidence: Participating in activities can boost your child’s self-confidence, and develop a can do attitude to get over adversity. Learning how to cope with losing is part of the process too.
• Personal interests: Extracurricular activities can help your child discover new passions and interests, education is also about stimulating their creativity and imagination .

Finding Suitable Extracurricular Activities
• School-based activities: Many schools offer a variety of extracurricular activities, such as sports, clubs, and music lessons. Be aware that spaces are limited so choose wisely when you apply, personally I was never able to get a place for the football club.
• Community organizations: Local community centers and organizations often offer extracurricular activities for children.
• Online resources: There are many online resources that can help you find extracurricular activities in your area. You can find information on your local council website from https://www.gov.uk/find-local-council

By following these tips, you can provide your child with the support they need to succeed in school. But remember, every child is different, so it’s important to find what works best for your family. Don’t forget to share the knowledge with your circle, see you.
